About

Dr. Bidwell researches, writes, and teaches at the intersection of pastoral theology, spiritual care, and the academic study of spirituality.

His current research involves the nature and nurture of hope among children and the empowerment of couples through pastoral consultation.

Co-director of the Center for Sexuality, Gender and Religion, he also co-directs the "Beyond Apologetics" project, a scholarly exploration of sexual identity, pastoral theology, and pastoral practice in conversation with queer theology and theory.

As a scholar and practitioner, Dr. Bidwell works in the communal-contextual and intercultural traditions of pastoral theology. He has particular interests in interfaith practices of care, liberation theologies, social constructionist psychology, and postmodern psychotherapies.

He is an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and a clinical Fellow of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.

Dr. Bidwell is publication editor of The Journal of Pastoral Theology.
